The Grid and Paylines
The reels are the vertical columns, and rows are the horizontal lines. Together, they form the game grid. To win, you typically need matching symbols to land on a "payline"—a predefined pattern that the game checks after every spin. These can be simple straight lines, zig-zags, or complex shapes.
Ways-to-Win and Cluster Pays
Modern slots often move beyond fixed lines. "Ways-to-win" systems count any matching symbols that appear on adjacent reels, regardless of their vertical position. Alternatively, "Cluster Pays" or grid games reward you for landing touching groups of the same symbol in a block, rather than following a line from left to right.
Special Symbols
Wilds: These act as jokers, substituting for other symbols to help complete a winning pattern. Some wilds have extra properties, like sticking in place or expanding to cover a whole reel.
Scatters: These symbols usually trigger bonus features or free spins. Unlike standard symbols, scatters often pay out or trigger features regardless of where they land on the reels.
To see exactly which patterns pay and what each symbol does, always check the in-game paytable panel.
